Siauliai county Mental Hospital

The public institution Mental Hospital in Siauliai was established in 1974. Initially it had 4 inpatient departments. In 1978, the Substance Abuse Department was opened. Presently the Hospital employs 212 people, including 16 licensed psychiatrists, 1 medical psychologist, 15 occupational therapy experts, 50 mental health nurses, 6 social workers and other nursing personnel.

The Hospital renders inpatient, rehabilitative, consultative, psychological and social aid to Siauliai country and other regions residents suffering from mental and psychological disorders.

The Hospital holds the Emergency State Departments for women and men (50 beds each), the 2nd and 3rd Departments of General Psychiatry (50 beds each) and Social Aid Department. Since September 1998, the Hospital has had the Daytime Inpatient Department, which aids the patients, having gone through inpatient treatment; integrates them into the society and helps them recover or gain social skills. The Hospital's service range includes pharmacotherapy, psychosocial rehabilitation, family consultations, psychotherapy, psychiatric nursing and care. The Hospital performs primary examination and differential diagnostics. If necessary, it renders consultations of other specialists and examinations as well.

In the spring of 2000, The Psychosocial Treatment Department was established in Palanga (city in Lithuania) to continue the inpatient treatment of the Hospital patients in the season of summer. The goal of this department is to raise the level of a patient's independent functioning at home and in the community.

The Consultative Department of the Hospital renders psychiatrist's and psychologist's consultations, establishes diagnoses, draws up and implements treatment and rehabilitation plans, consults families with mental patients.

The Reception Department is on duty around the clock. The Hospital also has a prayer room, a library for medical staff, a café and a pharmacy for patients and employees. In the same building experts perform medical - social working - capacity examination and outpatient forensic psychiatry examination.

The Hospital's medical treatment and rehabilitation expert have been following the teamwork principle for many years. The team members - a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a social worker and a mental health nurse - evaluate the patient's state, establish rehabilitation diagnosis and cooperate with the patient to work out the rehabilitation plan. The Hospital modified the character of mental health nurses' duties. Presently, a number of them perform the rehabilitative occupation work.

The Hospital's success in the last decade owes to the fact that the doors to Europe for this institution became wide open. In 1994 the Hospital started participating in the Gotland Project, later joined Sandwiken - Umea Project and the Project for Psychosocial Rehabilitation in the Baltic States. The aim of these projects has been theoretical and practical training of various specialists, teamwork training and realization of new ideas.
